Book Review - 'Oedipus Rex' by Sophocles

Epic, haunting and a complex character study of a tragic "hero". Plot holes shouldn't deter much in this timeless tale about the fall of a man who believed he had earned everything he fought for.

But "Happily Ever After" (and I know a Greek Tragedy version of that phrase doesn't exist) isn't the end of his journey. What if his easy task of killing a king wasn't as simple as he originally thought? What sacrifices were made to equal his resulting "happiness", and did he deserve it? But that happiness ends up being a lie and a mistake, so does he face up to it like a true hero? How does he deal with the horror?

Brains can be much more important than brute force, some heroes don't realize that they are cowards underneath until they are at their very worst predicament, and actions have consequences...

'Oedipus Rex' - the ultimate self-fulfilling prophecy story.

Final Score: 4/5
