Book Review - 'I Can Catch a Monster' by Bethan Woollvin

A cool, cute, adventurous, entertaining and quick picture book about a pink-haired action fantasy girl, Bo, who is told by her two brothers that she can't go out to fight monsters with them because she's too small - or it could really be because she's a girl - and who on her quest, motivated by anger and toxic masculinity, learns to listen to and help out "monsters" instead of hunting them, as is the tradition.

Who are the real monsters here?

The not-judging-and-not-killing-those-who-are-different-from-you-and-who-live-outside-of-you-and-your-home message is, of course, important as always, and is surprising to see from the same author as 'Three Little Vikings', which seems to tell the opposite.

I recommend and rank 'I Can Catch a Monster' (also known as 'Bo the Brave') higher than 'Three Little Vikings'. Among other reasons, I'm partial to heroines with pink hair. To action fantasy heroines with pink hair. So sue me.

Final Score: 3.5/5
